Blackpaw Studio vs DIY with AI coding tools
Updated October 2026
Short answer
If you can read the code these tools write, build it yourself. Paid plans start at $8 a month. If you can't, or the app is about to hold customer data, get a senior engineer to review it first. I'm Evan Coleman, a solo senior engineer at Blackpaw Studio, and my Production Readiness Audit is $1,500 flat, credited toward any build. The research on whether the tools make experienced developers faster is mixed.1, 2, 3
Who should pick what
Build it yourself if…
- You can read the diff. The tools write code, and someone still has to know whether it's right.
- It's a prototype, a small feature or a personal project, and a bug costs you little.
- You want to learn how it works, or you enjoy building.
- You want to keep the cost to a subscription. Cursor Plus is $8 a month, Copilot Pro $10 and Claude Pro $20.1, 4, 5
Pick me if…
- You can't review what the tools produce, and the app will hold customer data or payments.
- You want a second set of eyes before launch. The audit reviews security, deployment, CI/CD and bugs for $1,500 flat.
- You'd rather spend your time on the business. A build is a fixed scope, with MVPs from $15,000.
- You want a native iOS app launched to the App Store.

| Side by side | Blackpaw Studio | Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Codex |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Audit $1,500 flat, credited toward any build. MVP from $15,000. Ongoing support from $2,700 a month. | Cursor Plus is $8 a month, Copilot Pro $10, Claude Pro $20 (Claude Code is in Pro and Max) and ChatGPT Plus $20. Each also has tiers from $100 a month. Your own hours aren't in those prices.1, 4, 5, 2 |
| Time to start | One week for the audit. For a build, a written scope and fixed price first, then work starts once the first milestone payment is in. | Today. Cursor, Copilot and ChatGPT list free plans.1, 4, 2 |
| Who does the work | Me. On code you wrote with these tools I review it, fix the critical problems and report the rest. | You, with an AI assistant. METR's 2025 study of 16 experienced open-source developers across 246 issues found they took 19% longer with AI tools. They had expected a 24% speedup, and afterward they still believed they'd been about 20% faster. METR's page says that study is out of date. Its February 2026 update found developers 4–18% faster in late 2025, but both ranges include no change, and METR calls the result "an unreliable signal" because 30–50% of developers skipped tasks they didn't want to do without AI.6, 3 |
| Who's accountable when it breaks | Me. The audit report ranks what's dangerous and I fix the critical items. On a build, I correct defects in the agreed scope for 30 days after delivery. | You. Veracode found AI-generated code introduced risky security flaws in 45% of its tests, across more than 100 models and Java, JavaScript, Python and C#. The report doesn't give a task count.7 |
| What you own at the end | Source code, designs and other assets are assigned to you once you've paid in full. For an audit, the fixes go into your own repository. | Your repository and your accounts. Each vendor's terms decide anything beyond that, and I haven't compared them. |
Questions
Do AI coding tools make developers faster?
The evidence is mixed. In METR's 2025 study, experienced open-source developers took 19% longer with the tools while expecting to be 24% faster. In its 2026 update, developers returning to the study were 18% faster and new ones 4% faster, but both ranges include no change. METR says the signal is unreliable because 30–50% of developers skipped tasks they didn't want to do without AI.6, 3
Is AI-written code safe to ship?
Not automatically. Veracode found AI-generated code introduced risky security flaws in 45% of its tests, and it doesn't give a task count. GitClear's analysis of 211 million changed lines from 2020 to 2024 found moved or refactored lines fell from 25% in 2021 to under 10% in 2024, and cloned lines rose from 8.3% to 12.3%. It measures how code changed and doesn't count bugs.7, 8
What would you check in something I built myself?
Security, deployment and CI/CD, plus a triage of the bugs. You get a prioritized report in plain English and I apply the critical fixes. It's $1,500 flat, takes one week, and the fee is credited toward any build.
