Short answer

Pick a marketplace if you want a freelancer fast, want to compare candidates, or want to pay by the hour. Toptal says it makes introductions within 24 hours in most cases. Pick me, Evan Coleman of Blackpaw Studio, a solo senior engineer, if you want one person accountable for a fixed price. Marketplaces add their own fees on top of the freelancer's rate: Upwork's client fee is 3–8% depending on payment method.^{1, 2, 3}

Pick a marketplace if…

You need someone this week. Toptal says introductions come within 24 hours in most cases, and in 1–3 weeks when no in-network expert is available.¹
You want to try someone before committing. Toptal has a trial of up to two weeks with no billing if you're unsatisfied, and it trials up to three candidates per position.¹
You want to pay only for approved work. Upwork says fixed-price work is paid from escrow.²
You want hours that flex up and down, or a specialist for a short stretch.
Your budget is hourly and modest. Arc's published estimate for senior US freelancers is $95–$150 an hour, below my $180.⁴

You want a fixed price for the whole project, written down before work starts.
You want one person accountable, with no platform between us and no platform fees on top of my quote.

What do Upwork and Toptal charge clients?

On Upwork's Basic plan the client fee is 3–8% depending on payment method. The pricing page says 5%, or 3% for eligible US clients paying by checking account, while the help center says up to 7.99%. Upwork contradicts itself here, so I give the range. Business Plus is 10%, or 8% for eligible US checking-account clients. Toptal lists a $79 flat monthly fee, charged only if you proceed to matching, and you can cancel anytime. I don't quote Toptal's developer rates, because the figures I found are third-party and conflict.^{2, 3, 1}

Is a marketplace freelancer cheaper than you?

Often, per hour. Arc estimates $95–$150 an hour for senior US freelancers, and my effective rate is $180 an hour. Add Upwork's client fee and the time you spend managing the work. A fixed quote gives you the total before I start. An hourly contract doesn't.⁴

What if the freelancer isn't the right fit?

Toptal's trial runs up to two weeks and you aren't billed if you're unsatisfied. Upwork fixed-price work is paid from escrow, so you pay for approved work. With me, the scope and price are agreed in writing first, and I fix defects in that scope for 30 days after delivery.^{1, 2}
